Parenthood is an extraordinary journey. It begins not at birth, but from the moment you first hear those words: “We’re pregnant!” When my wife shared this incredible news, I felt an indescribable joy—a bond beginning to form even before my child was born. This bond isn’t just emotional; it’s foundational, shaping the life of your child profoundly. As a father, I embraced this role wholeheartedly, diving into parenting books, Harvard and Stanford research, and countless parenting resources, determined to nurture a child who would thrive emotionally, mentally, and physically.
A father’s love is often understated but remains critical in the emotional and cognitive development of a child. Research from Harvard University underscores that children with actively engaged fathers exhibit improved emotional security, higher self-esteem, and enhanced social skills. Conversely, children who grow up without a father’s love and active involvement are at greater risk for emotional and developmental challenges.
Emotional Instability: Increased likelihood of anxiety and depression.
Academic Struggles: Higher drop-out rates and lower academic achievements.
Behavioral Issues: Increased aggression and difficulty managing emotions.
As a father, I realized early on that my involvement could deeply shape my son’s life, influencing not just his immediate surroundings, but his long-term emotional and intellectual health.
My commitment to fostering a strong bond began when my son was just three months old. Inspired by Stanford research demonstrating that early reading significantly enhances a child’s vocabulary by up to 70%, I started reading to him every night. This wasn’t just storytime; it was brain development time!
Early reading accelerates vocabulary growth and cognitive understanding, giving children a powerful advantage academically and socially.
Every evening, we ventured into worlds of words, laying the foundation for his incredible linguistic capabilities that surfaced astonishingly early.
Despite resistance from family elders, I initiated tummy time when my son was just 25 days old. Although controversial among older generations, early tummy time strengthens a child’s spine and neck muscles, fostering early physical milestones. And indeed, he hit each milestone ahead of schedule—sitting, crawling, walking, and speaking—all because of purposeful early interactions.

One humorous yet profound incident stands out. The day he began crawling, my wife and her sister hurriedly placed a soft rug to prevent injuries. Instead, I intervened: “Let him fall and learn.” Sure enough, his face met the floor moments later, accompanied by tears. But guess what? He learned a priceless lesson—crawling can hurt, so walking must be easier! It wasn’t long before he took his first steps, humorously motivated by the need to avoid another face-plant.
Around one and a half years old, we encountered another critical teaching moment. During a car ride, my wife’s niece began crying for a balloon and promptly received one. My son followed suit, crying loudly. When urged by my sister-in-law to buy him one too, I chose to teach a different lesson. Instead of rewarding his tears, I calmly gave the balloon vendor money without accepting a balloon, demonstrating clearly that crying isn’t a currency. This interaction was misunderstood by others but crucial for my son’s development.
This incident encapsulated a critical parenting insight: discipline through lessons, not fear. Unlike traditional parenting methods involving physical punishment, I consciously chose never to strike my child, despite personal experiences of being disciplined physically during my own childhood.
Fear-Based Discipline: Often involves physical punishment, which can lead to emotional scars and suppressed emotions.
Lesson-Based Discipline: Involves teaching the child through clear and compassionate explanations, fostering long-term understanding and emotional resilience.
My approach differed significantly from my extended family’s traditional methods, often creating misunderstandings. However, the results spoke clearly: a happy, emotionally secure, and confident child.
Parenting isn’t just about discipline and bonding; it’s about continuous learning—for both the parent and the child. I constantly devised games revolving around sight words, numbers, and logic, making education fun rather than a chore. At meals, playtime, and during casual conversations, I incorporated concepts from Vedic mathematics, using sweets and toys as educational props.
The playful integration of learning into everyday life was foundational. Soon, the idea of homeschooling germinated, propelled by conversations with international parents from the USA, Canada, the UK, and India.
These resources offer a treasure trove of engaging educational games that parents can incorporate into daily routines, reinforcing learning naturally.
Excitingly, I’m currently writing a book aimed at helping parents teach mathematics through play. This book will feature innovative strategies and playful techniques, rooted in proven research, enabling parents to foster early mathematical skills effortlessly and joyfully.
